Gold (XAUUSD) is the most-scalped instrument in 2026 — high volatility, tight-enough spreads on major brokers, huge liquidity. Here's a repeatable scalping strategy built specifically for the London-NY overlap (13:00–17:00 GMT) when gold does its cleanest work.
Why the London-NY overlap for gold
Three reasons stack up in your favor between 13:00 and 17:00 GMT:
- Volume peaks. Both London and New York desks are active. Institutional flow floods the tape.
- Impulses are clean. Outside this window, XAUUSD chops in tight ranges that grind stops.
- News is often behind you. Most high-impact US data (NFP, CPI) prints at 12:30 or 14:00 GMT — post-news continuations happen inside your session.
The setup: 5m opening range break
This is the core repeatable pattern. Simple, but you need discipline to execute it consistently:
- At 13:00 GMT, mark the high and low of the previous 15 minutes.
- Wait for a 5m candle to close above the high (buy) or below the low (sell).
- Enter market on close of that candle.
- SL: 15 pips beyond the opposite side of the range.
- TP: 1.5R (22.5 pips if SL is 15).
That's it. Set the pending entry, set SL and TP, walk away for 30–90 minutes.
Why this setup works on gold
- The 15-minute pre-13:00 range compresses volatility right before the US session opens.
- A clean break in either direction signals institutional intent.
- Gold rarely reverses within the first 30 minutes of a real break.
- 1.5R lets you win with 45%+ win rate — an achievable bar.
The rules that keep you alive
- Max 3 trades per session. If all three lose, walk away — the regime isn't right.
- Max 1% account risk per trade. On XAUUSD with a 15-pip SL, that's roughly $0.007 per pip per $1 of risk. A $5,000 account risking 1% = $50, which is about 0.3 lots.
- Skip the 15-min window either side of NFP, CPI, FOMC. The initial spike is stop-hunt territory.
- Stop for the day after 2 losses in a row. Your read on the day is wrong; save capital for tomorrow.
- Don't move SL after entry. The whole strategy depends on the fixed SL. Widening it turns a 1R loss into a 2R loss.
Combining this strategy with SS7 XAUUSD signals
The strategy above is the base. SS7 XAUUSD signals add three edges on top:
- Bias filter. When our morning bias says "sell rallies," you skip the buy breakouts and only take sell breakouts. Instant win rate boost.
- Key level context. If the range breakout aligns with a marked institutional level from our desk, size up.
- News override. Our desk flags when to skip an otherwise-valid setup because of imminent news.
Traders combining the base breakout strategy with SS7 signals typically report a 5–8% win rate lift over trading the strategy alone.
A live example (from July 2026)
15-minute pre-session range on July 12: high 2382.10, low 2378.50 (3.6 pip range — tight).
- 13:00 GMT: NY session opens.
- 13:15 GMT: 5m candle closes at 2382.90 — above the 2382.10 high.
- Enter buy market at 2382.90.
- SL at 2378.20 (15 pips below).
- TP at 2390.10 (22.5 pips above entry — 1.5R).
- 13:47 GMT: TP1 hits. +22.5 pips locked.
Simple, mechanical, repeatable. No prediction, no over-analysis.
What breaks this strategy
| Failure mode | What it looks like | Fix |
| Fakeout breaks | Price breaks the range, reverses immediately, hits SL | Require volume confirmation on the break candle |
| Range too wide | 15-min range is 30+ pips | Skip — regime isn't compressed enough |
| Range too tight | 15-min range is under 2 pips | Consolidation, not compression — skip |
| News spike | Break happens during CPI/NFP release | Skip — take the continuation 15+ min later instead |
Session psychology — the invisible edge
Most XAUUSD scalpers don't lose to the market. They lose to themselves. Three habits that separate the profitable from the busted:
- Trade before 13:00 or after 17:00 = you're bored. The setup doesn't exist outside the window. Boredom trades kill accounts.
- Increase size after a win. The next trade doesn't know you just won. Stick to your fixed 1% risk.
- Revenge trade after a loss. Same as above in reverse. Walk away, come back tomorrow.
